The topic of elected representatives in Tasmania doing deals or - TopicsExpress

The topic of elected representatives in Tasmania doing deals or working with the major parties to form government is a valid issue that has shaped much of the discussion and debate around the Tasmanian parliament for more than 30 years. Going into an election once more Labor and Liberal have both declared they will not work with the Greens - or anyone else (including each other) - to form government. This means that should neither party obtain an outright majority they must either send us back to another election, attempt to run a government with a hostile house of Assembly (or potentially both houses) and face a new election within a year anyway, or break their promise and work with someone else to form government. All three of these options are a terrible outcome for Tasmania. It leaves us with either endless cycles of increasingly hostile and angry elections, an ineffective government or a dishonest government that quickly loses the support of the people. Honestly, I dont know how things will turn out, that is up to the Tasmanian people. I am willing to look at the situation at the time and work on the best possible outcome for Tasmania - which is to help the largest of the parties achieve a stable government without fear of having their budgets rejected by a hostile parliament. This is the position that any honest politician needs to take when it comes to forming government in any State or on a Federal level. At the end of the day politicians represent a hugely wide variety of opinions within the public domain, these opinions will force politicians to oppose one another on many many issues. Simply disagreeing however does not mean that we need to be enemies. Parliamentarians should be able to discuss and debate the issues using the facts at hand in a calm and respectful manner, and should focus on running the state instead of fighting petty political point-scoring battles.
