The official Syrian resistance, which comprises of a number of mainstream Sunni groups fighting against Bashar al-Asad, has a scholarly committee which issues fatwas on matters related to the uprising. Recently, they issued a fatwa claiming that ISs (ISIS no longer calls themselves ISIS and prefers IS) method of slaughtering a prisoner is un-Islamic. They say, amongst other matters, that none of the scholars of traditional Sunni Islam allowed this; it is cruel and barbaric and not befitting for a human; it is a type of mutilation that is impermissible in Islam; and that the Prophet and Companions never commanded a prisoner be executed in such a manner.
