The old fallacy of we have plenty of space! rears its ugly head again. Mr Nickel of the UKs Office for Budget Responsibility (!!) joins the irrational ranks of those who argue that the entire world population could live in Texas (or stand in a crowd the size of greater Los Angeles). Humans need more than the space needed to stand on your feet, or build homes! No economy has an infinite capacity to absorb new workers, and no society has infinite resources with which to pay for social benefits and infrastructure upgrades. And no matter how much the population grows (in the UK or elsewhere), the natural resources we depend on arent growing. Agricultural land is in limited supply, as is water and many of the inputs we need to grow food. But no matter, says Mr Nickell; only 10% of Britains surface is built up.
