Thanks to their amazing visual effects, unbelievable storylines and cast of A-list stars, the following movies became a success in the box offices, each of them grossing over 1 billion dollar worldwide. Filmmaking lists the Top 10 Films to win the audience’s heart and become major blockbusters. Avatar The development of this 3D blockbuster, which grossed an amazing $2,782,275,172, began in 1994. Filmmaker James Cameron, who had written and directed the film, delayed its production until 2009 in order to make sure that the necessary technology that will help him fulfill his vision is available. And indeed, the visual effects of Avatar and its fantastic storyline amazed the audience, thus making it Cameron’s second movie to enter the Top 10 Films list. Titanic The tragic story of the Titanic, the cruise ship that sank in its maiden voyage, has inspired the storyline of one of the greatest love stories ever seen on screen. First released in 1997, and later in 2012 on a 3D version, this David Cameron film had grossed $2,185,372,302 and introduced to the world the young Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred it alongside Kate Winslet. The film won 11 Academy Awards – the most Academy Awards ever won by a single film. It is also one of the few films in the Top 10 Films list that is not a sequel. The Avengers Marvel’s The Avengers premiered on April 2012 and soon broke the record for biggest opening weekend in North America and the fastest film to gross $1 billion. The film, that was written and directed by Joss Whedon, presents some of the 20th century’s most popular superheroes, and features some big Hollywood start such as Robert Downey, Jr., and Scarlet Johansson – a fact that probably helped it gross $1,510,617,210 worldwide and become the latest movie in the Top 10 Films list. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II Based on J. K. Rowling’s best-selling fantasy novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II is the last of the eight movies that told the story of the young wizard and his friends. The film is considered to have the biggest opening ever, as it grossed $483,189,427 on its first weekend on screen, and a total of $1,328,111,219 worldwide. Transformers: Dark of the Moon Released in June 2011, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the third and last film in the Transformers film series, based on the Transformers toy line. It was directed by Michael Bay and produced by Steven Spielberg, and stood out thanks to its spectacular effects that yielded a gross of $1,123,746,996. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King This is the last part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, based on the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and directed by Peter Jackson. This fantasy film was both a critical and commercial success, grossing $1,119,929,521, and had won all eleven Academy Awards for which it was nominated – an Academy Award’s record. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Released in 2006, Dead Man’s Chest is the second film of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Although the film got mixed reviews, its $1,066,179,725 gross makes it one of the top 10 films in the world in terms of revenues. The film features actors Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley and is distinguished for its amazing visual effects. Toy Story 3 This Pixar movie, distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, is a 3D animated comedy film telling the story of toys Woody, Buzz Lightyear and their friends. Released in 2010, it is the highest-grossing film of this year and the highest-grossing animated film of all times, making a total of $1,063,171,911. It was also the third animation film ever to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Film. The Dark Knight Rises The third and last part of Christopher Nolan’s Batman film trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, grossed $1,058,497,581 so far. The movie premiered on July 2012 and had managed to live up to the commercial and critical expectations of its predecessor, The Dark Knight. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides The fourth movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Penélope Cruz as pirate Angelica, had grossed $1,043,871,802. The film, which was distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, was released in 2011 on 3D in addition to the 2D version, and was inspired by Tim Powers’ book by the same name.
