The older I get, the more upset I get by crass materialism. I am not interested in eating homemade tofu in a cabin I built myself in the woods while reading poetry and communing with nature, but dammit, there is just more to life than STUFF! Stuff does not bring happiness; happy people can enjoy stuff. Again, people confuse cause and effect. Not that long ago, there was at least an attempt in the public forum to deride the commercialization of Christmas, to remind folks of its True Meaning -- whether one sees that as a specific religious one or a more generalized sort of kindness-and-cheer-to-all. The Charlie Brown Christmas special was an effort in that direction, as was this tune from 1958. Now, it seems the battle is over and the nobler sentiments and hallowed intangibles have been vanquished by avarice, consumerism, and gimme-gimme-gimme! It makes me sad.
