The only picture of daddy, Jake Charles Sysk Sr. that we have and only because Jr. was at the mill with his camera and sneaked a click. I am forever grateful. I always thought we were very, very poor but just thinking about the ten years that I knew Dad, from age three to age thirteen, he bought two different plots of land and built houses on them the first one I was 3 the second one I was 10 and he sawed all the lumber for that one on his own Sawmill. When I was 6 he bought a 40 acre farm and farmed it and worked at the shipyard in Mobile at night. Every morning when I woke up my little brother Tony would be setting up beside me in bed with a candy bar in each hand. I would say, Give me one He would look at me and shake his head no. I didnt know Daddy was putting a candy bar under our pillows every morning when he came home. I thought he only got them for Tony. I must have been 20 or 30 years old before I realized what had happened.I told Tony about it and first words out of his mouth were ,I will go get you a candy bar, I didnt mean to make him feel bad.
