The only thing thats similar is that both of the movies emphasize Vikings, other than that I cant find any similarity. Another thing might be that the female character in How to Train Your Dragon is tomboyish and a good fighter like Merida. But even the protagonists are different in temperament (Merida is short fused, Hiccup is calm and deliberate, Merida was out-going and good with arrows, Hiccup is good with making stuff). I think the fathers seem familiar because they tried to create a Viking father, high in brawn and energy and generous,cheerful type in both of the movies. Otherwise theres not much similarity in the actual story, the themes look similar because were more used to different movies focusing on different mythologies. Since both of them are based on Viking culture it seems familiar.
