The opposition MMD has dismissed reports that its leader Nevers Mumba on Sunday shunned reconciliatory talks with Rupiah Banda. MMD Director of Communications Raphael Nakachinda told Hot FM News in a statement that such reports are part of deliberate campaign aimed at discrediting Dr Mumba by painting him as a man who does not honour his word. Mr Nakachinda clarified that Dr Mumba never agreed to attend the said meeting although he indicated in a phone conversation with its organisers whilst he was outside the country that he would only commit himself to attending such a meeting after receiving a full briefing about its objectives. He said Dr Mumba has preached forgiveness and reconciliation throughout his life adding that he would be the last person to shun any genuine process towards resolving whatever disputes that may exist. Some media outlets reported that a reconciliatory meeting initiated by the International Institute of Democracy and Conflict Resolutions between Dr Mumba and Mr Banda failed because Dr Mumba shunned the meeting. In a related development, MMD President Nevers Mumba is banking on the Church to support him for the January 20 2015 presidential election. Dr Mumba told Hot FM News that the Church constitutes a larger population of Zambians adding that this gives him strength as a presidential candidate. But Mwandi MP Michael Kaingu who is Mr. Rupiah Banda’s campaign manager says his team is not intimidated by the crowds attending Dr Mumba’s political rallies. Dr. Kaingu has charged that the huge crowds at Dr. Mumba’s rallies are not genuine
