The other day, I stepped down from a curb to cross the street and it somehow made my phone fall out of my pocket and then bounce down into the rain gutter….I just heard a noise and then looked down and saw nothing but another person saw what the noise was and said hey man, that was your phone. I was so glad he spoke up because I didnt even realize that was the noise I heard. So, I proceeded to figure out how I was going to get my phone out of the gutter as quickly and easily as possible. Upon looking into the gutter, the phone wasnt even visible because it was on a slope down there so my phone had slid out of view and was not within arms reach anyway. So, trying to get it out through the actual gutter vent was not plausible. Upon further assessment, I noticed a manhole cover just over the sidewalk where the gutter was and made the conclusion that it opened into the gutter so one could go down there. The manhole gutter was screwed tightly on and was not going to budge without tools. Ross Steeves happened to walk by at that exact moment. But he did not have the right size allen wrench on him though he had a lot of tools in the back of his truck. So, I gave him the rest of my ice cream as a thank you for trying and proceeded to make my way to the mechanic across the street. I found the right size wrench and then had to go back to borrow an iron rod. As I was going back to the mechanics to grab that, the po-po passed by right at the corner where I was trying to retrieve my phone, then turned around and turned into the post office not far away as I crossed the street to get back to my mission. I figured, well, I cant see them now so, they probably cant see me so, I got that heavy cover off the hole, climbed down the short latter and there was my phone. Not a crack on it. I put the manhole cover back on with a little help from curious gathered passerbys and returned the tools and felt very lucky to have been able to retrieve it pretty quickly. I wonder what would have happened had I just tried to get a hold of the city for help? Or had gone to find those cops and asked for help? I think I was efficient and didnt have to waste city manpower on my phone. Right? Resourceful. Grateful.
