The other day ago I was stuck within a few tons of steel, plastic, upholstery, and Japanese engineering while surrounded by stimulant addicted shambling zombie yuppies united in a quest to part with material wealth for mundanity made impressive by the adornment of a symbol, I could only move inches at a time by flexing my ankles and I could do nothing but watch as precious seconds of my life ticked by that I could never get back. In other words, I was in the Starbucks drive-thru. As I creeped towards the promised land of the service window, I noticed a pretty cool phenomenon. People were paying it forward. A caffeine fueled karma domino train was chugging along as each person got their drink for free but paid for the next person in lines. It was cool and the cashier barista lady was quite mad with glee about it and showed this by yelling loud enough so that everyone in line could hear. Life was wonderful. Then the guy in front of me got to the window, took his free coffee, raised his cup in a cheer to selfish horrible people everywhere, and just drove right the hell off. As I pulled up the barista was devastated and told me that he didnt pay it forward. I was disappointed because my order was like twenty bucks and there was a good chance that the lady behind me had just gotten a tea or something (she drove with a pinky distended which I took as a sign) so I stood to save a lot of money. Plus, pay it forward stuff makes my guts all warm like I had eaten radioactive kitties or something. I promptly paid for my junk and left. I couldve tried to resuscitate the movement by buying that fancy lady her tea but the moment had passed. That dude had ruined it. He had stolen everyones ability to be nice to one another. We all couldve spent the rest of the day feeling good about ourselves because we had bought each other over-priced coffee. Which is actually a load of crap, I dont need to buy some stuck up woman a cup of water and dried grass to be a good person (Im being a bit harsh on her I know). That selfish jerk had shown us all that being a good person shouldnt be so easy. It should come from within and find expression no matter what the circumstances. It still wouldve been nice to do of course, and thats why even though I respected his lesson, I still hope that that guy hit a big pothole and spilled his coffee all over his lap and burned his winky off. Because karma.
