The other day during our mental health presentations, one of the groups did such a good job on mental health and the homeless. They showed this video and I cried.https://youtube/watch?v=THxtcWNw3QA The video itself doesnt have much to do with mental health, but its awesome regardless. Everyone has a story, and you dont know why people are in the position they are in. Speaking of my mental health class, if I learned anything this semester in psychiatric nursing, its that mental health is REAL. Just because you cant see it like you can a physical illness, doesnt mean its not there. There is NOT enough awareness or funding for mental health (which another group presented on - Florida does NOTHING funding wise for mental health). They are just as horrible, if not worse, than having a physical illness. They are often times scary and debilitating. Imagine hearing voices that tell you to kill yourself or others; imagine being so depressed or anxious that you cannot function; just imagine not being able to control your mind. There needs to be a change in the stigmatization associated with mental illness, and the public needs to be educated. There needs to be more mental health screenings and awareness in schools. So many times I pondered how somebody could ever shoot up a school. I thought they just did it out of pure evil-ness, which maybe some do, but I believe the majority are really very mentally ill, experiencing such internal turmoil, and they needed help and never received it. If no one agrees on wanting to do anything about gun control, then something needs to be done about the lack of funding and resources for mental health. I never realized how passionate I am about this topic until I took this course (which I hate most of the time because I cannot stop getting Bs on exams). Educate yourself and advocate for more funding. It is important, just because you cant see it doesnt mean its not there.
