The other night I saw Boyhood, Richard Linklaters latest film, and Ive been trying to figure out how to express how much I admired this movie. In a business where the pressure to come up with louder and faster movies has pushed a lot of amazingly talented directors into putting out crap they probably wouldnt have touched in the past, Linklater has managed to continue writing movies that are built around dialog, and character development. Boyhood is a novel on the screen. There are long periods of silence. There are conversations that dont escalate to overblown climaxes. But mostly, this film is made up of interactions between people that feel completely real. Each scene is a photograph, and together they form a collection that tells a story, quietly, with great understated emotional impact. Im so glad someone is allowing this guy to make the movies he wants to make.
