The other thing was bats, flying rats nothing but pest. Zipping, through the air with the precision of a laser. Eating insects, brown ugly .Not only were the wizards leery of the bats .But the boy was also. They had no potion to combat the bats; just their legs .Sometimes when they reeled their lures from the waters, the ugly little creatures would hit the lures thinking they were bugs. Once in awhile the winged gargoyles missed the vibrating tail, and got the hook. When this happened the line would start going in circles .The wizards and the boy knew, this was no fish .No it was the winged demon .Not as big as the monkey sized spiders .Little eerie things, like a swarm of killer bees .The very things that could bite you and suck the life out of you .And now one was on the pole. The wizard s and boy would drop their poles, legs would carry them a save distance. When senses were regained .The three warriors knew what would have to be done .The boy would have to make his way back to the tackle box open it quietly ,find the garlic hidden there .Land the bat and dispose of it . The boy would inch his way back, all the while the wizards shouted encouragement .They would tell the boy put up your collar so your neck isn’t exposed .Keep on your hat they like to go for the hair. The boy would pull up his collar and pull his hat down on his head. Soon only his eyes were showing .About the time the boy felt safe, one of the wizards would ask do you remember Uncle Skeeter .The boy never responded, he already heard about Uncle Bug. Soon the pole was within reach. The boy would grasp it peer over the rail, to see where the bat was. First glimpse of the creature would send the boy back to the street. After adjusting his collar and hat, checking his pocket for the garlic the boy would be back at the railing. He would crank the handle of the reel .When he figured there was about five feet of line left he would swing the tip of the rod toward the sidewalk .If he was lucky the little monster hit the cement .But sometimes the creature became free .The bat being disoriented from the battle would fly away low to the ground .Zigging zagging trying to gain its bearings. At these times the boy saw the real powers of the wizards because they vanished, poof gone. One time as the boy peaked over the side to see the bat .He ran forgetting the most important rule drop the pole. He stood in the middle of the road, pole in hand, and bat on the line. Flying in circles like a kite caught in a cross wind. The boy looked to the wizards for help .This time they hadn’t disappeared; they lay in the road laughing .The boy couldn’t drop the pole now; the blood sucking kite may attack. So he stood in the road bat flying circles above his head like a remote controlled helicopter .The boy knew he had two choices throw the pole over the rail. If he did this the wizard’s wrath would await. Only thing left was to stand his ground in the street until a car came .He stood he had no choice but to stand he was frozen. Soon he seen headlights then honking as the car came closer, at the last minute the boy dove with pole in hand pulling the bat down even with the grill of car. The boy lay hoping it worked; he knew it had because he heard the line zinging off his reel as the car sped off driver cussing. The bat embedded in the grill, lure still attached to bat. One of the wizards yelled to the boy, you owe me some line .The boy smiled walked to the railing grabbed a spider shook it at the wizard and said I will use his web to line your pole. The wizard looked at the boy and said! Remember Uncle Bug. The boy dropped the spider and stood in the street.
