The other thread was verging on ridiculously long, so for those interested, this is my response to my school superintendent who told me (vicariously thru the principal) to get a waiver. Im going with compliant but adamant at this point. I can get amped up to ten quickly if Im not careful. Greetings Dr.__ , My name is Leah and my son RP is a kindergarten student at _______ Elementary IN, IN. I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the standardized tests RP is mandated to take. Specifically, I am writing to report my concern that, although I explicitly stated my refusal to allow RP to partake in any standardized testing for the remainder 2014-2015 school year, I have been told that he will in fact be taking the “middle of the year mClass reading checks” test. I worry that, if I have been so disregarded for one test, that my refusal will not be recognized for other standardized tests either (including but not limited to DIBELS, Fontas and Pinnell BAS, Benchmarks, Acuity, IREAD K-2, IREAD-3, ISTEP+, End-of-Course Assessments (ECAs), Advance Placement Exams, ISTAR-KR, IMAST or ISTAR (for children with disabilities), ILAAS/LAS, mCLASS, Indiana Course-Aligned Assessments, National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)). MS. ___ ’s response indicates that in order to abstain from the test I need to obtain a waiver. I visited the Indiana Department of Education’s website and tried to find more information regarding said waiver, and it is unclear to me how I am to go about obtaining one, much less obtaining one and then completing it in time for the imminent test deadline. I do not wish to be penalized for refusing to allow RP take the test without a waiver (or worse yet, for him to be penalized), particularly when there are no clear guidelines as to how to obtain it, complete it, or submit it. If it’s a voucher you want, can you please email it to me so that I can have it signed and submitted before the test is administered? I have attached my original letter to the SCHOOL , submitted Monday January 5, as well as the principal’s response, which I received Wednesday January 7. I have communicated via email with Ms.______ since then simply to establish whether or not it is SCHOOLs intention to go ahead with administering the test to RP – despite my refusal letter – and she has verified that this is what you instructed her to do. I did not anticipate having to take additional steps beyond my express, written wishes regarding my refusal, and I am concerned that there will not be enough time to have everything submitted before the scheduled test time (which, as far as I understand, could be moved to Monday Jan. 12 because of this weeks delays and closings). I will fill out the waiver when you provide it for me, and in the meantime RP is not to undergo any standardized testing. I have included RPs teacher, principal, school board members, Glenda Ritz, and Indiana’s Senators on this letter so that they may be made aware of the steps I am making to deal with this matter in an appropriate and timely fashion. Sincerely, Leah
