The palm reading doco on SBS last night was fascinating. I was amazed by the Indian dentist who was using finger print patterns to predict a predisposition for caries. According to the doco, palm reading is part of the Ayurvedic tradition. Working from this tradition, this dentist had refined her learning so far as to be able to also correctly diagnose the condition of each subject taking part in the doco. Subjects had conditions ranging from Downs Syndrome, to congenital heart disease, Schizophrenia, breast cancer, twins, and, of course, bad teeth. The genetic expert also participating was impressed by her skill. His final comment was along the lines of: we have the technology now with genetic testing, why would we choose the old ways? This is analogous to choosing to ride in a donkey and cart when you are given the keys to a Ferrari. My thoughts: how much lower would the cost of quality health care be if we truly acknowledged the value of the traditional healing approaches and incorporated them appropriately into modern health care?
