The partnership between Irving Oil and the New England Aquarium has proved itself to be vital to the understanding of North Atlantic right whales and the research, conservation, and education efforts around this endangered species. This partnership has allowed shipboard monitoring surveys for whale sightings, calving records, and mortality rates as well as the collection of information regarding acoustics, genetics, endocrinology, and behavioural studies. This data is essential to the New England Aquarium in their efforts to monitor the health of the right whale population and to then provide data for recovery measures in Canadian waters. Irving Oil’s funding has also facilitated the ability of the New England Aquarium (and its partners like the Campobello Whale Rescue Team) to respond to entangled right whales and assist in the subsequent disentanglement efforts.
