The past several days have been extremely difficult with many people, who have never even met my mother, taking it upon themselves to make false assumptions/accusations about my mother, her character, and the motivations behind her recent decisions. It would have been much less painful if these comments had been directed at me, but instead, they have targeted the most kind, patient, selfless, humble, hardworking, dedicated, and forgiving person I have ever encountered. In fact, in my 29 years, I have never once heard her utter an unkind word about anyone else - including those that have persecuted her throughout this situation - and I am certain that anyone would be hard-pressed to find a single soul that could offer evidence to the contrary. Despite the many negative remarks that have been made, there have been far more people who have had the courage to join us in standing up for the truth and calling for informed and conscious decision-making based on unbiased scientific inquiry. Many have reached out to offer words of support and encouragement, to remind us why my mother is so loved, and to share personal stories about how she has impacted lives in positive ways. The countless messages we have received from my moms former students, current students at SMM, the parents of those students, past and present co-workers, former classmates of all of my family members, fellow SMM parishioners, the leaders of various other parishes and organizations, and many many others are what have kept us strong. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people. - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
