The people in Ferguson, MO seem to make a big deal out of the fact that the number of black police officers is totally out whack with the percentage of the population. Some years ago, at the univesity I just retired from ... a PROMINANT engineering facility ... a woman professor talked to me about the lack of female engineering professors. I asked her (she had been there for quite soome time), Do you know what the proportion of male to female students we have here? She said no. I told her that there were five males for every one female on campus. Perhaps the women prefer to get into the broader work force than into teaching. It must have worked ....... she was on the committee to look into this and figured they needed to change their approach. You cant get people to apply for a position if, 1. Theyre not qualified, 2. Theyre not recruited, 3. Theyre not trained, 4. 5. 6. ... etc. (And I was just a custodian)
