The perils of buggy travel on Aucklands early roads ... Another accident happened about 9.30 on Saturday evening, on the Asylum Road, Point Chevalier, through the upset of a buggy, when three men, Johnson, Evans and Saunders, were thrown out and one of them, Johnson, was severely injured. Mr Murray hearing a noise, went out to ascertain the cause, accompanied by Miss Lawrence. They found the three men on the ground, one lying under the belly of the horse. Johnson appeared in great pain, and was bleeding from the head. He was taken into the home of Mr Lawrence, and Dr Young was sent for, and was in attendance without delay. Three scalp wounds were sewed up; it is also feared that the spine is injured. This morning he appeared slightly better, but was unable to stand. The men were all sober at the time, and the accident was caused by a deep night-cart rut in the road. Auckland Star 9 October 1882
