The ploy is being called the one ring scam as it involves people receiving missed calls on their phone from scammers calling and hanging up. If you call the number from the missed call back, you are connected to a caller-paid toll service or chat line outside the country. You might only hear music and/or audio advertising, but you will pay dearly for it, at least $19.95 and possibly more depending how long you stay on the line. The calls originate from area codes in the Dominican Republic (809), Jamaica (876), British Virgin Islands (284) and Grenada (473), but scam artists may even be buying up and using local numbers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
