The poem O Holy Night (Cantique de Noël) was put to music by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem Minuit, chrétiens (Midnight, Christians). Poet Placide Cappeau wrote it at the request of the church in Roquemaure, France after the church organ was renovated. And he agreed, although himself an atheist. That Christmas, the song was premiered in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey. The beauty of this carol spread quickly throughout France and eventually to the world.
