The poll we forwarded to you earlier, which was conducted by The Denver Post, asked if people wanted a toll-road on I-70. As of late this morning its tally was 19% YES and 81% NO, with nearly 2,500 respondents. Its still open to voting. Today’s poll question might be: Would you like an effective emergency evacuation route – or – would you like a moat?” As you may be aware, the proposed new I–70 would include four service road lanes at-grade with ten additional lanes many feet below ground level, in a 30+ foot-deep trench [with only a tiny % of it being covered]. Check out the attached photo from Channel 7’s website, and another from Channel 2’s. Yesterday’s flooding might be a sneak preview of whats to come on I-70 if CDOT proceeds with current plans for I-70 on the east side of I-25. The “freeway in a trench” CDOT is proposing for I-70 could be incredibly worse because it’s much longer and would have practically no escape points from rising water [listen to the Channel 7 story to hear the fear of the occupants of the car that was quickly overtaken by water yesterday on 38th Ave, with kids trapped inside]. Note that CDOT’s proposed “trench is moderately below the water table – so water issues could be present even when there is no rain or melting snow. Maybe this only comes in the form of higher maintenance, but many fear that this will be a big problem even in times of moderate rain and snow. The SEIS is due out in about a month. PLEASE be ready to make formal public comments beginning around September 5! Stay tuned for more information.
