The port of Vigo May closes positive The general cargo traffic at the Vigo port rose 2.6% during the first five months of the year. According to the president of the Galician port authority, Ignacio López-Chaves, after the meeting of the board of directors of the institution held today, it is great news for the terminal, which maintains a positive trend in recent months. As explained by López-Chaves, in the case of port traffic (which include bulk, less value added general merchandise), this figure was an increase of 2.19% until May of this year. Among the most important goods, quoted the chief port new vehicles, up from 27% during the first five months of the year, is one of the fastest growing commodities through increased production of PSA Peugeot factory Citroen and attracting new traffic, such as Renault in Valladolid, Vigo reaching for export route to Turkey by sea “due to our operational and traffic frequencies”. Also, the president of the APV highlighted the rise experienced by the preserved (35%), wood (37%), the finished granite (15%), which is imported rough through Vigo and after being transformed is exported to Sites with consequent added value, and auto parts (11%). Similarly, port president said the increase of 0.8% of the turnover of the institution, which has reduced staff costs by -1.5% and operating income by 2.6%, thanks to an ambitious policy of cost reduction. “We managed to significantly reduce operating costs to 2007 levels and balance the books and, thanks to that, the after-tax results are positive in 256,000 euros,” said Lopez-Chaves.
