The posting of the article about the birth of a horribly deformed infant in 1888 brings up an IMPORTANT point. We must not read the article from our PRESENT cultural values and perspectives. There is an intellectual trap called presentism that will color our perceptions of the past. Presentism assumes the people of 1888 thought just like we did, and people caught up in presentism will harshly judge the deeds, thoughts and words of people like the author of the piece about the gravely deformed infant. And when we stumbled upon an article like the one shared here, people will indeed judge the writer, because presentism will expect the author to think and write like we do.
