The powerful Redress Project has brought up some amazing discussion and has opened up space for people who perhaps were less knowledgeable about Canadas national horrific tragedy - the hundreds and hundreds of missing and murdered Indigenous women - to become aware and active. There is a lot of ignorance on this campus, and because of this it is very important that the project was displayed here. We hope that you have become more aware and are disgusted by the lack of due care and respect that these women have received. We all deserve to be safe, whether it be in our relationships and friendships, on the streets or in our homes, on our campus or in the bars - we have the right to be without fear of attack. The Native Womens Association of Canada has collected some facts that I hope make your stomachs turn: - Aboriginal women are almost three times more likely to be killed by a stranger than non-Aboriginal women are. - NWAC’s research indicates that, between 2000 and 2008, Aboriginal women and girls represented approximately 10% of all female homicides in Canada. However, Aboriginal women make up only 3% of the female population. - Where this information is known, more than half (59%) of women and girls died in a residential dwelling. We need to come together to address this horrific violence, as no woman - no person - should be in fear for their safety or lives. WHAT CAN YOU DO??? There is a Sisters in Spirit Vigil on Saturday at 3pm Oskayak High School, you should all come! https://facebook/events/290634647805250/ Then on October 8th at 7pm there is a What do I need to know about MMIW? Teach-in and Community Discussion - where you can actively seek education and learn about how to get involved or make some change! :
