The practice of yoga is fundamentally a science of self-transformation. We arrive at the yoga studio, attend class, learn a little about breathing, right posture, and some meditation... and then we go out in to the world and dont always remember what we practiced while in the sacred space of the yoga studio. Holistic yoga practice modifies our lives by first modifying our thoughts; in the form of purification. Pure thoughts... lead to pure emotions, which lead to clarity... not just clarity of vision and physical perception, but clarity of deep understanding, clarity of higher knowing, and clarity of Being. We then realize a literal transformation, which the sages and great teachers refer to as enlightenment. This is a physical phenomenon. The teachings of rāja yoga prescribe this process, which is attainable for all, and is not as mysterious and esoteric as it may seem.
