The problem with any stress on performance—whether gifts, ministries or activities—is that God is always more concerned with the internal than the external, with ethics rather than activity, with motives rather than deeds. What matters is being like Jesus. It is a terrible temptation to measure the Spirit’s work in us by the number of activities we are involved with, and by our skill and success in performing them. In truth, the only acceptable measure is the degree to which we have allowed His fruit to develop.
