The problem with our modern political system? Values Voters! Let me give you an example... Many conservatives strongly support drug testing welfare recipients. They hold work ethic as a value, and they figure if our tax money is going to support them, then we have the right to drug test them. The same conservatives would be outraged if a local college stopped funding a Baptist prayer group on campus citing public money being used. Many liberals would celebrate the latter and decry the former. The fallacy is the belief that rights can be allocated on the basis of what we value as a society. Then there are principles. This country was founded on principles. A principle would be that taxation is theft. Another principle would be that giving someone money does not negate the recipients God-given right to life, liberty and property and all the freedoms pertaining there unto. The people of this country, which is the grandest God ever established on this planet, have always coexisted peacefully guided by principles, but fought to the death over values.
