The problem with representing everyone, is that you dont belong to anyone. His relationship to evil, I feel is something to learn from. He had a lot of flaws, but he was very adaptive. I think that was his greatest quality. In the beginning of his career, he would denounce evil. However, later on in his career he began to dwell in the room with evil without denouncing it, and became almost obsequious. By the end of his life, he had struck a balance that we as a country can learn from. Dont be afraid of talking to your adversaries, but dont bracket what happened before you entered the room. Dont blackbox history, dont leave your principles at the door. It doesnt have to be an act of weakness. The one thing I learned from his life is that he espoused and exhibited a reverence for dignity that was really really unusual. He spoke a lot about freedom from fear. And because he was working in the worlds worst places, He had a humility and awareness of the complexities of the world around him. - Samantha Power speaking about Sergio Vieira de Mello
