The problem with the education system in Hong Kong is this: when a child’s imagination is at its best, the education system designed by Chinese people assigns art and music as a secondary subject. At the same time, independent thinking isn’t encouraged. Thus, instead of developing the child’s natural talents, and provide an early training into critical thinking, you make them rote learning (simply make them remember things) in that time. Rote learning is teaching, but not educating. There’s also a big contradiction in Hong Kong: why do parents so interested in sending their children to international schools (such as Delia School of Canada)? Because it’s taught be Caucasian people. Even Chinese people view schools Chinese schools as second-rated. Otherwise international schools can’t receive school vouchers worth several million HKD from the HKSAR Government, and also won’t look so overconfident in attitude. This proves that international schools are better. However, Chinese people won’t research why international schools are so prestigious. They only view them as brand names on Canton Road (a famous shopping street in Hong Kong), so long as the name is written in the Latin alphabet, it’s prestigious, and mindless worship them… When former Communist Party Secretary for Chongqing, Bo Xilai, was promoting Mao Zedong’s beliefs and ethnic nationalism during his time in office, his son was receiving a British education in Harrow School in London. This is very ironic, but why is it ironic? So, this is the major distinction between the two education systems. One of them is to develop free thinking. But free thinking doesn’t mean undisciplined, no need to study, nor mindless criticism. There’s a formula in it. ~ Chip Tsao, on the problem on Chinese peoples attitude on education, on the 24/09/2014 edition of Summit.
