The program for right living presented to me as a boy was that I must obey my mentors, so that I might get on in this world and excel in the skills of the tongue, skills which lead to high repute and deceitful riches. Augustines Confessions Bk1,14 trans Maria Boulding. It seems to me that the only difference between Augustines school and those in modern Britain is that British ones dont lead to repute and riches. Schools teaching purely to prepare people to fall unquestioningly into society and merely concerned with exam results; this is not education! Education should prepare people for life, enabling them to think for themselves and to engage productively and intelligently with the world.
