The prohibition on graven images which Schoenberg heeded as few - TopicsExpress

The prohibition on graven images which Schoenberg heeded as few others have done, nevertheless extends further than even he imagined. To thematize great subjects directly today means projecting their image after the event. But this in turn inevitably means that, disguised as themselves, they fail to make contact with the work of art. (Theodor W. Adorno, Sacred Fragment: Schoenbergs Moses und Aron, 1963) Todays lecture in my opera-class will discuss Arnold Schoenbergs Moses und Aron (1930-32, unfinished).
