The project will be based around the study of various types of audio processing tools and their effects on the listening experience. I intend to compare the impact of mastering tools, such as compression, equalisation and harmonic excitement upon the subjective enjoyability of music, all the while researching psychoacoustic theory and taking clinical audio measurements in order to understand why these tools lead to a more (or less) sonically pleasing outcome. Why you are doing the project, why it is a useful thing to create/study, what are the intended outcomes? I am undertaking this project in order to improve my knowledge regarding the tools in question, and to gain an insight into - quite simply - why do they make things sound good or bad. It is important to myself as an aspiring sound engineer/producer to attain answers to this question, as to truly know why and how something improves aural enjoyability will allow me to use the tools much more effectively and appropriately. How will the project build on analysis and research? I intend to gather technical information regarding how the mastering tools work, the result of their utilisation (spectral and waveform analysis) and importantly, the effect on the listener. The technical information will be collated from various literary sources such as British EQ. Sweetwater. 1999-12-20, Extraordinary EQ from Extraordinary Engineers. Mackie, Dynamics Processors – Technology & Applications, Rick Jeffs, Scott Holden, Dennis Bohn, and online sources such as Sound on Sound. I intend to demonstrate the principles learned from these documents with audio examples and detailed analyses. I will conduct a number of blind listening tests in order to determine the psychoacoustic effects of the mastering tools, and compile a questionnaire in order to gather a detailed response which will help me to discover which tool has the greatest impact on the enjoyability of music, and more importantly - the reason why. By conducting the aforementioned listening tests, I hope to come to a conclusion regarding which mastering tool is most effective in isolation. However, more importantly I want to develop an understanding of why the actual characteristics imparted by the various processes - which I will measure using audio analysis tools - are pleasing (or not) to the listener. This will be backed up by extensive research into psychoacoustics and cross referenced with the feedback I receive. My project will be a success if these aspects confirm each other, leading to a conclusion.
