The proposals for the Centenary Commemorations of the 1916 rising to honour and remember those who fought and died were revealed at a ceremony at the GPO in Dublin today. Firstly... What was the 1916 Rising and why do we celebrate it.. The Easter Rising was an insurrection staged in Ireland during Easter Week, 1916. The Rising was mounted by Irish republicans with the aims of ending British rule in Ireland and establishing an Irish Republic. The Rising was planned in secret by seven men who had formed a Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. They were, Tom Clarke, Sean McDermott, Patrick Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Joseph Plunkett, James Connolly and Eamon Ceannt. The Rising lasted from Easter Monday 24 April to 30 April 1916. The insurgents proclaimed an Irish Republic with Patrick Pearse as President and Connolly as commander in chief. They occupied positions around Dublin at the General Post Office (GPO), the Four Courts, the South Dublin Union, Boland’s Mill, Stephen’s Green and Jacobs’ biscuit factory. The Rising was suppressed after seven days of fighting, and its leaders were court-martialled and executed, but it succeeded in bringing republicanism back to the forefront of Irish politics. In the 1918 General Election, Republicans won 73 seats out of 105. In January 1919, the elected members who were not still in prison at the time, including survivors of the Rising, convened the First Dáil and established the Irish Republic. The British Government refused to accept the legitimacy of the newly declared nation and later that day began the Irish War of Independence. Plans for the Centenary Celebrations.. The biggest celebrations of the rising so far where held in 1966 on the 50th anniversary and the 100th year anniversary celebrations are expected to be the biggest Ireland has ever seen. The programme will be called Ireland 2016 and will have five themes: Remember, Reconcile, Imagine, Present and Celebrate. Committees will be set up in every country to plan the Rising commemoration. The Rising commemorations will have an international dimension. A major documentary on 1916 is currently under preparation at Notre Dame University. Plans are being developed for a three week festival at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC in May/June 2016. The centre is planning a “Proclaiming Ireland” festival. The Irish embassy in Britain will run an academic and cultural programme. The National Concert Hall will run a series of events over seven days during Easter Week 2016. ] Arts programmes will be launched in schools and a children’s day will be held to commemorate the children who died in the Rising. As part of the Governments plans, 22 million euro (£17.2 million) will also be spent on seven flagship projects to create permanent reminders of the 100-year anniversary, including an interpretive centre at the GPO in Dublin. The main event of the celebrations will be a military parade held on Easter Sunday 2016, which falls on March 27th. It will be led by relatives of those who participated in the Rising. After the parade, the Proclamation will be read from the steps of the GPO by President Michael D Higgins. Many more events are planned and we will keep you up to date as soon as they are announced.
