The purge at the New Republic -- reportedly outrageous treatment of a distinguished editor by the new owner (formerly from Facebook)....and then a mass exodus...makes me think about how it seems as if vast (beyond market) sums are being poured by new elites into acquiring the last remaining independent thought leaders and news and opinion outlets...and then kind of rendering them unrecognizeably globalised or else otherwise intellectually neutered...Millions being poured into various Oxford and Columbia and NYU and other departments and fellowships for this seeming end...reports from my friends in the sciences and in political science who say that DHS money and counterterrorism money is buying up any independent research and making it all about security studies....weird millions spent to fund independent journalists, to snap up unprofitable newspapers....I am seeing a pattern of few remaining robust civil society institutions or thought leaders remaining who are not securitized or globalized or neoliberalized....by funders or new owners...thedailybeast/articles/2014/12/05/the-new-republic-implodes.html
