The reading assignement might not be possible in everycourse, it depends on the nature of the course and the learning outcomes, there are some courses where reading might cost time (for this reason and generally reading assignement during the course is scattered along the lesson in form of passages bearing ideas relevant to the course), however reading as a support can also be done before the course. nevertheless, this makes the idea and term handouts suitable in both situations, thats why accompanying the course with reading material that can enlarge students background for relevant expectation during or before the session: means if students read a little about something they are more prepared and at the same time it allows the teacher to check their understanding of a unified source (the reading material) from another perspective it also encourages learners autonomy and stimulates their critical thinking. i wish i could help :)
