The reason why I asked for help with observations this evening is because the radar sometimes cannot see the rain. Check out the 1st picture; the radar beam rises in altitude with increasing distance and can sometimes completely overshoot the rain, which was the case tonight. The two Bay Area radars are located at about 4000 ft, so they can ONLY see whats above that elevation, as it is illegal to point the radar down. This isnt just a Bay Area problem; the second image shows the higher-elevation holes in coverage west of the Rockies highlighted in black. The reason for the gaps in coverage: topography (mountains).
