The recent typhoons that hit Okinawa reminded me of my Fathers B-29 crew doing weather recon: Typhoons could do serious damage to a fleet of airplanes sitting on the runway. Therefore, it was critical to get the planes off the ground and into the air where they would be safe during the storm. One of the duties of B-29 flight crews on Okinawa was weather reconnaissance. They flew into approaching typhoons to determine their direction and severity. (fall 1947, Chap 12 in Still Having Fun.)
