The referendum result was disappointing for the national tendency; - TopicsExpress

The referendum result was disappointing for the national tendency; I too was disappointed, as much because the result was self inflicted as because the emotional imperative took over from the rational perspective. The independence ideal is a just and righteous one, unfortunately the way it was realised alienated people who would have otherwise have accepted it. In Alec Salmond the YES campaign had a handicap, that being full of emotional ambition it failed to recognise. He presented as a greedy loudmouthed braggart who refused to answer straightforward questions so often it became clear he had no answer. His assumption that prevarication, obfuscation and dishonesty would endear him to voters was misguided at the least and just plain arrogance at best. His currency dilemma, his assumption that he could just stroll into the EU, his insistence that oil would solve all financial issues, this despite despoiling vast tracts of land with windfarms in the name of greener power were just some of his more obvious misjudgements. His insistence that oil would save the nation was wishful thinking, most of it is still in the ground and those oil wells still in production are reaching their uneconomic limits. No hint as to when or how long it would take for the black gold to fill his coffers, or what we would do until then. I never discovered how it would all work; the SNP has insufficient MPs of any stature capable of running any of the many departments necessary in the governance of a country, nor has any other party. The departments required do not exist and there was apparently no plan in place to realise them. Making it up as he went along was never going to inspire confidence; he depended solely on emotional triggers to gain the trust of many. Being brave and jumping off a cliff to see if it hurt when you hit the ground as a concept was never going to win votes. I hope that the independence issue can be revisited in time, by whoever is in power and that they have a proper blueprint for a nation ready. Just because the lying cheating deceitful British Government behaved/behaves abominably is no reason to attempt to emulate them. The NO vote was in self defence, better the bunch of shites known than the ones yet to get into their full political stride of lying, cheating, and deceiving. There is now sufficient groundswell of political awareness that whatever the British Government decides to do it will be scrutinised more closely than ever before, and it would be a foolish government that thinks its all over.
