The relative distance between Rarotonga and Penrhyn was shortened yesterday, as the two islands were connected via Skype for a High Court hearing. Using the popular video conferencing tool, lawyers in Avarua courthouse were able to question witnesses on the island during proceedings concerning an electoral petition. In this photo taken yesterday, Penrhyn mayor Tini Ford can be seen taking the oath before Chief Justice Tom Weston, lawyers, and the public gallery - which included a number of prominent politicians. The undertaking is believed to be a first in Cook Islands history, and is expected to save tens of thousands of dollars in travel expenses. Even though internet connections between Rarotonga and the remote islands of the Cooks are known to be shaky, yesterday’s proceedings went off without a hitch until mid-afternoon, but the link was promptly restored and court resumed within minutes.
