“The religious practices brought from Africa by the slaves to Cuba were developed in the palenques or quilombos. These quilombos were never destroyed but lasted until the War of Independence with Spain in 1868. African warriors from the quilombos played an important role in bringing victory to the nationalists. The Africans on the quilombos in Jamaica, Haiti, Dominica, and the Guianas were also unconquerable. Peace pacts and other practices of subterfuge had to be employed to prevent the total take-over of the Americas from the Africans warriors of the innumerable quilombos in the New World. In fact, in writing about the Saramaka maroons on the quilombos in Surinam, a Dutch Governor of the colony likened them to the Hydra-the many headed snake of Greek mythology that sprouted two heads for each one cut off. It is not surprising that the Saramakas for 100 years fought a war of liberation against the Dutch colonists.” Dr. Edward Scobie “Global Afrikan Presence” Page 195
