The research here has some very interesting implications for people who developed tinnitus from somatic means (TMJ or neck pain, or some other physical cause). Rhythmic gamma brainwaves reduce the threshold for noticing subtle stimuli. The thalamus portion of the brain is similarly involved in people with tinnitus; somatosensory (touch, pain, etc.) sensation gets confused and interpreted as sound by the auditory cortex because the threshold for inhibiting the noticing of those sensations was lowered! I wonder if people who develop tinnitus from somatic causes and not primarily sound-induced damage have too much gamma waves and thus they feel too much/are too sensitive in the first place?? biosciencetechnology/news/2014/08/driving-brain-rhythm-makes-mice-more-sensitive-touch
