The results estimated by Dr. Walter Immerzeel, Francesca Pellicciotti, and M.F.P. Bierkens are fascinating. As the HKH Mountains get precipitation and snow from weathers systems from North (Russia, Mongolia and China) and West as far away as Atlantic, therefore, Indian Ocean and its Monsoon system is not the only precipitation reaching the HKH mountain systems. Therefore, the oscillation, as they get deeper will result in severely cold winters and warmer summers. This should sustain the glaciers as winters will bring lots of new snow and in summer, rivers should maintain their water (maybe also increase it) as wetter hotter summers bring rains to the plains. The report talks about the rivers Indus and Ganges both have very large populations depending heavily on these rivers for agriculture and livelihoods.
