The risk of a catastrophic solar flare within the next 100 years - TopicsExpress

The risk of a catastrophic solar flare within the next 100 years is actually quite high. According to one study (which admits its assumptions are untested) places the probability of Carrington Event sized flare hitting the Earth by 2020 at 12%. Such a flare would induce millions of volts into high-power lines basically everywhere on earth, fatally crippling all major power grids beyond repair. It is estimated (by FEMA) that such an event would have a recovery time of 4-10 years and reduce the population of North America by 2/3rds. Interestingly, areas and systems without heavy reliance on industrial infrastructure, such as traditional indigenous cultures, and modern off-grid terra-culture systems, would be relatively unaffected. It would basically ONLY wipe out modern industrial civilization. Interesting, huh?
