The rules were simple: •Pack for anything •No refunds My friends had convinced me. It was the most spontaneous thing I had ever done in my life. I just wanted to end up somewhere warm. Well, I got what I wanted. It’s true what they say; be careful what you wish for. The plane’s windows were blacked out so I don’t know exactly where we ended up, but it’s tropical. We all agreed it has to be somewhere in the amazon. Our guide was the first one to die. Isn’t that how it always goes? Whatever is out there, hunting us, it isn’t natural. We’ve all seen it, but none of us agree on what it looks like. We all saw something different. All we can agree on are the eyes. Big, red, glowing, pupiless eyes in the dark. Watching us. It could kill us at any time, we’re easy prey, huddled into a tiny clearing in the middle of some jungle. It’s just playing with us. I think it enjoys seeing us so afraid. Jack tried to fight it, he made some heroic speech and ran off into the thick. The hope he instilled in us was quickly stolen when his battle cry turned into a desperate scream that was promptly cut off. All you could hear that night were silent sobs and the distinct sound of bones crunching. The louder we cried, the louder it chewed. It wanted us to hear it. I keep thinking about the last words the flight attendant said to us when we landed, her eyes full of a sympathy that made no sense at the time: “Good luck.”
