The second piece on this Saturday evenings exciting all-American MasterWorks program will be Howard Hansons popular Symphony No. 2 (Romantic). This beautiful and powerful work is connected to two very different sci-fi films, both considered classics of the genre in their own right. The end of the 1st movement of Hansons symphony was used (reportedly without the permission of the composer) to underscore the closing and end credits of Alien (1979). Jerry Goldsmith, who scored the rest of the film, was as surprised (and displeased) as anyone to find that the music hed composed for the end had been replaced. According to many, Hansons symphony was also highly influential to John Williams when he wrote his score to E.T.
