The second trial for a Detroit police officer who killed a girl - TopicsExpress

The second trial for a Detroit police officer who killed a girl during a raid continued Tuesday after the presiding judge denied the defenses request for a mistrial. The request came after an emotional outburst in court last week from the victims grandmother, Mertilla Jones. When Jones returned to the stand Tuesday morning, the judge immediately informed Jones she would not be as patient with her. The judge had said if one more emotional outburst happens from any witness, the trial cannot go on. Jones said she understood and continued on with her testimony, recounting the night back in 2010 when 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones was killed. A Detroit police unit was looking for a murder suspect when they threw a stun grenade through a window and burst into the home. Weekley insists he accidentally pulled the trigger when Jones grabbed his gun, but she denies any interference. During her testimony Tuesday, Jones did pause once and asked for a drink of water when talking about how her son, Aiyanas father, reacted when seeing blood on the couch. The judge asked the jury to step out for a few minutes before Jones continued. During cross examination, Weekleys attorney immediately accused Jones of putting on a show last week and got this startling admission out of her: Jones testified Weekley was standing in the doorway when the gun went off, not standing next to Aiyana as she said in her deposition. The next witness, Jones nephew Marqwell Robinson, was called to the stand Tuesday afternoon. Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter. A jury last year couldnt reach a verdict in Weekleys first trial. CLINK LINK TO WATCH HER TESTIMONY IN COURT: myfoxdetroit/clip/10640288/grandmother-of-aiyana-jones-finishes-testimony
