The secret of a good complexion The secret of good skin is partly down to everyones unique genetic make-up, but how you take care of it and of yourself, is another key factor, says Lawrence Kirwan. A few small changes in your usual skincare routine can work wonders. Simply cleanse and tone your skin twice a day and apply a daily sunblock in the morning, and your skin should function perfectly well - and without the need for moisturiser. Protecting your skin from UV damage is essential to keep wrinkles at bay. I would recommend a total sun block of SPF 30-45 every day, as exposure to UV rays is one of the main culprits of premature skin ageing. You need only to compare the skin on your inner arm with the skin on the back of your hands to see what sun damage does - the skin on your hands has been exposed every day, while that of your inner arm has been left largely unexposed. Although some sunblocks contain moisturising ingredients, the ratio is usually very small and not a major component of the total block. In addition, I recommend drinking eight to ten glasses of water every day and sticking to a healthy diet that is rich in fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid wearing foundation, too, if you can. Like moisturiser, it only clogs the pores and glands, and slows down the natural exfoliation process. Once your skin is functioning well and looking healthy, you wont need it anyway. If you wish, you can still use cosmetics to accent your lips and eyes and apply shadow and highlights to contour the face. And, of course, two major donts are: DONT stay out in the sun, and DONT smoke. Think about exercise as entertainment, and if you have to choose between a stodgy meal in front of the TV or going to the gym, choose the gym. Once you are on a regular exercise regime, you will eat and act more healthily.
