The semantical argument on whether Malaysia is a secular or - TopicsExpress

The semantical argument on whether Malaysia is a secular or Islamic state can only mean two things : we have effectively progressed beyond the struggle of basic survivor-hood, and that we are too peaceful a country. Its only when everyones tummy is filled and there is no issue of basic needs that people began to look for other form of excitement. To those who think that Malaysia is a secular nation : if you think that what we had for the past 57 years is secular, secular it is! To those who think that Malaysia is an Islamic nation : if you think that what we had for the past 57 years is Islamic, Islamic it is! Arguing over semantics is very superficial and unproductive. When other countries are debating primarily about what form of energy to reduce or use, what form of greenery policy to lobby for, what form of economical progress to achieve, and what sort of technological advancement to break through, we are stuck in semantical argument over something that has been established, and upon re-affirmation or rebutted brings nothing productive at all to our progression as a nation. Asking if Malaysia is an Islamic nation or secular nation is unnecessary. America can be a Christian country by constitution but in practice they are more secular than most of the so called secular countries. Timor Leste might be a secular country but it is more catholic than many Catholic countries in South America. Since when did we regressed so much that we spend more time and effort arguing on the form over substance? By trying to rebut or affirm the status quo of our nations state of religion, we are unsettling and belittling the foundation and fabric of our society as intended by our founding fathers. Constitution says, in article 11, that Islam is the official religion of the state, and non Muslim are free to practice our religion. So be it! So be it! So be it! Dont unsettle that by trying to be unnecessarily creative, semantics, but yet unproductive. Happy Wednesday. - Tai Zee Kin
