The seminar “Are Entrepreneurs Born or Made? Sharing Experiences with Egypt” was jointly organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Egypt and the German Science Centre (DWZ) in Cairo on the 25th of June 2013 at the Conrad Hotel. The seminar brought together researchers, industry experts, academics, entrepreneurs, policy makers, and financial institutions from Egypt and the MS to share knowledge and expertise with regards to aspects of an ecosystem that is conductive to innovation and entrepreneurship. In his opening remarks, H.E. Mr. Michael Bock, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, noted that, “The topic entrepreneurship takes a leading role for the German Science Centre Cairo this year”. Prof. Dr. Nicola Breugst, TU München, and Prof. Dr. A. Hamid El-Zoheiry, President of Heliopolis University, discussed stakeholders’ map, functions and communication of the Innovation Ecosystem in Germany and Egypt. The Innovation Challenges and opportunities in the Southern Mediterranean Arab Countries were presented by Jean-Eric Aubert, Senior Advisor of the Centre for Mediterranean Integration, CMI, Marseille, France. The conference wrapped up with a final panel discussion titled “Outcomes of well-designed innovation ecosystem: The recipe not the ingredients”. The panel featured noted experts from various education and research institutes in Germany and Egypt who engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on how to best move forward and support Innovation and Entrepreneurs. Innovation and entrepreneurship allow for sustainable economic growth, as the experience with emerging and developed economies has proven. It is thus of immense importance to put forth every effort to create an environment where governments, NGOs, researchers, academics, educational facilities, financial institutions, and other organizations cooperate to help entrepreneurs leverage their ground-breaking potential. EU-Egypt Innovation seminar series is an initiative that aims at sharing experiences, from the European Union and different European Union Member States (MS), in developing and enhancing research and innovation ecosystems. The notion of supporting research and innovation as well as building strong innovation networks is at the heart of EU development strategies. EU Member States as well as many countries around the world are increasingly supporting novel ideas, new technologies and investments in research and development
